Meet Kuching's 'Catwoman'.

The three "CatWoman"
NOT! a real picture only reference.
KUCHING: Like the popular comic character, the "Catwoman" here makes her appearance only when darkness falls. Before the "Catwoman" appears about 6.50pm daily, a cat will already appear, seemingly from nowhere, to wait for her. By 7.30pm, there will be three cats waiting -- one hiding under a car and the other two, waiting at the junction of Jalan Rubber and Lorong Rubber, looking at the direction where the "Catwoman" will normally make her appearance.

Fifteen minutes later, the "Catwoman" will finally appear carrying a few plastic bags. She will slowly walk from her home in Jalan Rubber, about 100m away, towards the junction where the cats are waiting. From afar, one can see a cat at her heel, following her closely. When she approaches the junction, and the cats will start to meow. She will then open the plastic bags which contain cooked fish heads and leftovers.

This has been a daily routine for Lip Teck, 69, for more than a decade now. She knows all the cats, and they trust her completely. "When night falls, you will see these cats appearing out of nowhere. They will wait for this old lady without fail," said a security guard of a bank near the junction.

Lip said her routine first began after she saw a pregnant cat being run over by a car."Since then, I have made a vow not to let these cats die looking for food on the streets." Lip, who is single, stays with her brother. She said she spent about RM50 per month to buy food for the cats. "Now, there are fewer stray cats around. Two or three years ago, there were as many as 20 but now, there are only about eight of them."
