28 July 2010 - Motor Racing: Meritus await confirmation
MERITUS Racing is anxiously awaiting the outcome of their application to take them to the next level in the GP2 main series in Europe next year. Team owner Firhat Mokhzani discovered the application has already been submitted to GP2 rights holders Formula One Management (FOM). Malaysia-Qi MeritusMahara.com would become the first Asian team to compete in the series, which Meritus Racing are aiming to compete in by 2016.
"We have submitted the application to compete in the main series and now we're just waiting for the announcement. We have an idea of how we are going to work, like which drivers will be given the seats, but we will have to wait for the announcement before taking it further," said Firhat.
The team completed their most successful season in the GP2 Asia 2009-2010 series, where Italian driver Luca Filippi finished second in the drivers' championship. The team ended fourth in the constructors' championship, competing against the top teams from Europe.
Firhat said the team's Formula BMW Pacific programme for next year is already being prepared with test sessions for some promising drivers already lined up. The Iru1 Motorsports duo of Timothy Yeo and Daniel Woodroof, both 13-year-old Malaysians competing in the Rotax national and Asian series, will be given test slots with the team.
